What is Acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese medicine is the oldest continually practiced medicine in the world, with evidence of acupuncture from as far back as 4,000 years ago. Chinese medicine works by reestablishing, building and balancing the body’s life force energy known as “Qi” (pronounced ‘chi’), which runs along the body’s energy pathway or meridians.

Traditional Chinese medicine views disease and symptoms as results of imbalance or blockage of body’s natural energy flow. It is these imbalances that manifest in physical, emotional and stress related disorders. These disorders can often present themselves as vague, all-encompassing symptoms of exhaustion and generalized poor health without a specific medical explanation.

The goal of Chinese medicine is to restore harmony by unlocking the blockages of Qi in the body; and between the equal and opposite qualities of Yin and Yang.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical technique for unblocking qi by inserting needles at particular points on the body to balance the opposing forces of YIN and YANG. Qi is an energy that is believed to permeates all things, and flow through the body along 14 main pathways called meridians. When yin and yang are in harmony, qi flows freely within the body and person is healthy. When a person is sick, diseased, or injured, there is an obstruction of chi along one of the meridians. Traditional Chinese medicine has identified around 500 points where needles are to be inserted for specific effects.
